About
GolfDigest GPS
What is GolfDigest GPS?
GolfDigest GPS is a
Location Based Service for your mobile phone that uses GPS to give
you accurate yardages on the golf course. GolfDigest GPS shows your exact
location on an interactive golf course map and the precise distance
to the front, center and back of the green. This allows you to
choose the right club and improve your golf score.
GolfDigest GPS gives you
a “bird’s eye view” of the every hole on the golf course you’re
playing. As you choose a hole, GolfDigest GPS displays the full hole (the
tee box, fairway, hazards, cart paths and green), your location, and
the distance to the front, center and back of the green. As you
approach the green, GolfDigest GPS zooms in to display a more detailed
digital map view of the hole.

Is
GolfDigest GPS easy to use?
Yes. With just a
few keystrokes you can see where you are on the course and view
accurate yardage measurements.

What does GolfDigest GPS do for me?
GolfDigest GPS's primary
function is to help you choose the right club. How often has your
approach landed short of the green, rolled into the water or carried
into the fairway bunker that you didn't think you could reach?
GolfDigest GPS maps are
expertly digitized from satellite and aerial imagery. Unlike the
drawings you see on your paper scorecard, these maps accurately
capture the exact geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of
every point on the course. GolfDigest GPS gives you a yardage reading to
the green that is often more accurate than the markers on your
course.

How will GolfDigest GPS improve my game?
Club pros say that
mid-handicap golfers choose the wrong club an average of 15 times
per round that can cost a golfer as many as 10 strokes per round.
GolfDigest GPS gives you the tools to help you choose the best club for
each shot.

How GolfDigest GPS use GPS?
Using at least four
GPS satellites, your phone’s GPS receiver and our maps, GolfDigest
GPS
calculates where you are on the golf course and how far away you are
from the green.

What does the USGA say about using GPS?
The United States
Golf Association (USGA) and The Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St.
Andrews (The R&A) have sanctioned the use of distance measuring
devices such as GPS receivers and laser rangefinders effective
January 1, 2006.
The new decision
(14-3/0.5) states "A Committee may establish a Local Rule
allowing players to use devices that measure distance only. However,
the use of devices that gauge or measure other conditions that might
affect a player’s play (e.g., wind or gradient) is not permitted. In
the absence of such a Local Rule, the use of a distance-measuring
device would be contrary to Rule 14-3."

How accurate are the GolfDigest GPS maps?
GolfDigest GPS's maps
are drawn from satellite and aerial imagery and are geo-referenced
to be within approximately one yard of their actual geographical
position. Most of the imagery used for GolfDigest GPS maps is less than
five years old when the map is drawn. However, any golfer knows that
courses periodically change - for example, greens or tees are moved
or bunkers are added. If you feel that the course map does not
accurately reflect the current state of your course, send an email
to support@GolfDigestGPS.com describing the inaccuracies and we will
work to make corrections as quickly as possible.

How are the GolfDigest GPS Course maps created?
We draw the
GolfDigest GPS Course Maps from satellite and aerial imagery. All of the
imagery we use is georeferenced and orthorectified to assure map
accuracy. We have access to such imagery for all of the continental
48 states plus parts of Alaska and Hawaii.

Common Issues
I
can’t find the course I want to play?
GolfDigest GPS offers
thousands of digital golf course maps. We are adding new courses all
the time, so check back in the future.
GolfDigest GPS isn’t giving me accurate distances?
The most common
reason for inaccurate distances is based on when you request the
updated yardage. You must be standing at the location of the ball
before requesting an updated yardage by selecting the “Refresh”
option. If you request the updated yardage when walking towards the
ball, the yardage info will then be based on where the request was
made rather than the location of the ball giving you inaccurate
measurements.
